Cologne Infectologist honoured
DZIF researcher Oliver Cornely has been elected as a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology (AAM) in honour of his achievements in the field of life-threatening infections in immunocompromised patients.
“I am especially pleased about this acknowledgement from my US colleagues because it underlines the implications of life-threatening infections in elderly patients,” Cornely explains. The internationally renowned infectious disease researcher from the University Hospital Cologne is the coordinator of the DZIF clinical trial centres.
With the fellowship programme, the Academy aims to make scientific excellence visible in microbiological research fields. It identifies experts and connects them globally. There are currently 600 active Fellows, mainly US-American researchers, including around a dozen Nobel Prize laureates.
Responsibilities of the AAM include informing the public about current themes in microbiology, such as multidrug-resistant pathogens, Ebola and other emerging infectious diseases. The AAM develops diagnosis and treatment guidelines, and makes recommendations for microbiologist training.
