Press Conference at the DGI/DZIF Annual Meeting: "Future of Infectiology: New Antibiotics and Market Incentives for Innovation”
We cordially invite you to our press conference on "The Future of Infectiology: New Antibiotics and Market Incentives for Innovation" at the joint annual conference of the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF) and the German Society for Infectious Diseases (DGI).
Germany continues to conduct high-quality basic research. German science also has a promising potential for innovation and progress in the medical and scientific fields. However, the development of new drugs, especially antibiotics, is hampered by a number of obstacles. One important aspect is the lack of funding for the cost-intensive Phase II and III clinical trials. The development of new antibiotics is uneconomical for companies due to the high costs involved and the deterrent effect on investors. As a result, the pharmaceutical industry has largely withdrawn from the field. Without effective market mechanisms to provide additional incentives for innovation, there is a risk that the much-needed development of new antibiotics will not take place.
We would like to inform you about recent developments in the field of antimicrobial therapy and explain why economic incentives are essential and urgently needed in this context.
Our experts at the press conference include
- Prof. Dr. Rolf Müller, Coordinator of the DZIF-research area “New Antibiotics” and Managing Director of the Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS)
- Prof. Dr. Maria Vehreschild, Chairwoman of the German Society for Infectious Diseases (DGI), Coordinator of the DZIF-research area "Healthcare-Associated Infections" and Head of Infectiology, Frankfurt University Hospital
