Short description

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites no longer respond to antimicrobial drugs such as antibiotics, antivirals or antifungals. This occurs due to genetic changes in the microorganisms that enable them to evade the effect of the drugs. AMR is a major global health problem as it complicates the treatment of infections, leads to longer courses of disease and increases the risk of serious illness or death.
