Detailed description
Assays are usually based on molecular biological methods. They can be qualitative or quantitative. Qualitative assays allow statements to be made as to whether or not a certain substance is present in the material under investigation. With quantitative test systems the amount can be determined. Examples of assays used in infection research and diagnostics are ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immuno Sorbent Assay), FIA (Fluorescence Immunoassay) or PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction).
