The viral load of elite controllers remains below the detection limit of conventional testing procedures (assays). Where does this exquisite control of the virus come from? The ultimate cause has not been conclusively clarified to date, and it is very likely not always the same cause, but a different cause depending on the patient group that leads to "elite control". These cases provide hope that a long-term remission or "functional cure" might one day be possible.
