Gastritis develops as a consequence of too much stomach acid or of the mucous film usually covering the stomach lining to protect it from stomach acid being destroyed. In most cases, this is due to an infection with Helicobacter pylori, which protects itself from stomach acid by producing a buffering substance. Chronic gastritis may lead to stomach ulcer and stomach cancer.
