Detailed description

B lymphocytes, which produce the desired antibodies, are fused with immortalised myeloma cells (cancer cells). This fusion enables the cultivation and multiplication of the desired antibodies: B cells only have a limited lifespan and myleoma cells are strongly deregulated cells that are not subject to programmed cell death. Only the hybridoma cells are able to secrete unrestricted monoclonal antibodies.
