Short description
Latency refers to a viral state in which the virus is integrated in the DNA of its host cell and in which no viral proteins are produced.

Detailed description

Infections are difficult to detect in this phase. No new virus particles are produced. Drugs and the host immune system are unable to eliminate the viruses. Different stimuli such as UV light or stress can cause reactivation of the viruses followed by the respective symptoms. Viruses with a latency phase are, for example, HIV and herpes viruses.
