Short description
mcr-1 is a gene that contains the information for the enzyme MCR-1, which makes bacteria resistant against Colistin, an antibiotic of last resort.
Synonyms
Mobilized colistin resistance-1

Detailed description

Colistin is used as an antibiotic of last resort to treat infections with gram-negative bacteria. Bacteria with a corresponding resistance gene were discovered at the beginning of 2016 for the first time. As the gene is also found on plasmids which can easily be transferred between bacteria, there is a risk of spreading.
