Short description

RNA interference is a natural mechanism by which genes in cells can be targeted for silencing.

Synonyms
RNA Silencing
RNAi

Detailed description

RNA interference is triggered by small, double-stranded RNA molecules called siRNA (small interfering RNA). RNA interference is thought to be, among other things, a protective mechanism of the cell against "non-cellular" RNA, for example viral RNA. RNAi is also increasingly used as a genetic engineering technique in laboratory experiments.
