Siderophores are iron-binding compounds released from bacteria and fungi, which are used for iron-uptake.
Detailed description
Microorganisms have a high need of iron. To meet this need they produce siderophores, which they release into the environment where they bind to iron. Siderophore-iron-complexes are then taken up again by the microorganisms.
