Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is an inflammation of the meninges and the brain that is caused by viruses and transmitted by ticks.
Detailed description
Ticks infected with TBE viruses can transmit the
pathogen during a bite and cause TBE. Germany, too, has risk areas where ticks more often carry the virus, which increases the risk of infection. In most cases, infection is asymptomatic. If symptoms show, they are fever, headaches, muscles aches, sometimes followed by inflammation of the meninges and the brains. Patients usually recover completely. There is, however, a
mortality of one percent. A prophylactic vaccination exists.
