Short-term training program for early career scientists of DZIF African Partner Institutions

The next application deadline for the DZIF Academy programmes is 16.03.2025.

The DZIF Academy provides each African Partner Institute (API) with 5,000-25,000 € per year to organize short-term training programs on site or at one of the German DZIF locations. The purpose of the short-term training program is to specifically train African early career scientists from DZIF-funded projects and to better integrate them into the DZIF network. The connection to a DZIF project must be clear from the application to the Academy. 

The training aims to:

  • strengthen the scientific skills of early career scientists for successful project planning, implementation and analysis.
  • support the career development of early career scientists in medical research 
  • support the development of an independent research profile of African scientists

Possible modules
(organized by API together with German DZIF partner sites based on specific needs/requirements)

  • Language: e.g. English language course
  • Didactic: e.g. teaching scientifc content                                       
  • Writing: skills in the area of funding acquisition/scientific writing
  • communication, productivity & career skills (coaching with DZIF Coach Paul Charlton)
  • Attendance of an DZIF event: e.g. DZIF Annual Meeting, Summer or Autumn School of the DZIF Academy incl. oral or poster presentation (mandatory)

The short-term training program covers:

  • course and/or registration fee
  • costs of travel and/or accommodation between Africa and Germany
  • costs of travel and/or accommodation to a DZIF school/conference 
    (Daily provisions or additional costs of social events will not be covered.)

Who can apply?
DZIF African Partner Institutions together with German DZIF partner sites.

The connection to a DZIF project must be clear from the application to the Academy. It must be clear which project will benefit from the training and whether any new collaborations will result.

Application Deadline

Applications are possible throughout the year, but have to submitted either in spring or fall according to the deadline on the Academy website. Starting January 1st of the following year. A multi-year term is not possible.

The applications for the short-term training are submitted as a joint application with the German DZIF partner institution to the Academy. The Academy reviews and evaluates the application. If the Academy approves the application, the Funding Management (FMM) will proceed the review. After a positive check, the FMM continues the administrative process.

Applications have to include training objectives, program of the course, expected number participants and budget justification.
