Symposium

International DFG/DZIF Joint Meeting on Viral Infections of the Liver and the Heart

The main goal of the symposium is to address major viral threats to liver and heart health and to foster collaboration between clinical professionals and fundamental scientists to advance the scientific and clinical understanding and treatment of these viral infections. The symposium is aimed at both early career scientists and established experts working in the field of viral infections of the liver and heart.

Hepatitis viruses represent a considerable burden for healthcare systems worldwide. Hepatotropic viruses cause liver infections that are chronic and can lead to serious liver damage such as cirrhosis. In view of the global impact, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has formulated the ambitious goal of eliminating viral hepatitis by 2030.

Despite the fact that hepatitis E is the most common cause of viral hepatitis in Europe, this virus remains largely unexplored. At the same time, hepatitis B infection continues to cause a high mortality rate worldwide, with 800,000 deaths annually, despite the availability of an effective vaccine. Around 10% of people infected with hepatitis B develop chronic hepatitis, which can lead to liver cirrhosis and liver cancer. To achieve the WHO target and reduce the spread of hepatitis E and B, it is crucial to promote the exchange of expertise among hepatitis experts.
