Short description

Immunopathology deals with diseases and tissue damage caused by a disrupted or misdirected immune response.

Detailed description

The immune system protects the body against pathogens. However, if it reacts too strongly, too weakly, or against the body’s own structures, this can itself lead to disease or tissue damage.

Such disorders can affect both the innate and adaptive immune responses. These include autoimmune diseases, allergies, and immunodeficiencies. In infectious diseases, excessive or misdirected immune responses can contribute to tissue damage and thus to the progression of the disease.
