Immunopathology of viral infections
Prof. Dr. Andreas Pichlmair and his team are investigating the complex interactions between viruses and the human immune system. How does the immune system respond to external attacks, and what countermeasures do the pathogens develop? Human cells have evolved sophisticated mechanisms to combat viruses, while viruses, in turn, utilize diverse strategies to modulate immune responses.
Prof. Pichlmair studies the fundamental mechanisms of this interplay and leverages these insights to identify new antiviral compounds using advanced search algorithms. These compounds are subsequently tested in vitro and in preclinical models (to the publications Stukalov and Huang). The knowledge gained is also being used to develop novel treatment approaches, such as the application of mRNA-based immunostimulants (to the publication).
