Short description
Staphylococcus aureus is a bacterium that colonizes many people without causing disease. Under certain circumstances it may, however, cause infections, which are difficult to treat due to existing antibiotic resistances.
Detailed description
The
pathogen colonizes many people unnoticed and is often found in the nose. In case of a weakened
immune system, however, is can cause wound infections and even
sepsis. Many variants of
Staphylococcus aureus are resistant against common antibiotics. Especially against
methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus there is hardly any antibiotic effective any more.
