Short description

Vancomycin is an antibiotic used to treat infections with gram-positive bacteria (e.g. streptococci or staphylococci).

Detailed description

In the treatment of severe infections caused by staphylococci, vancomycin is often used as a reserve antibiotic. However, vancomycin-resistant staphylococci were described as early as 2002 and are increasingly being isolated worldwide since then.
