The Zika virus is a flavivirus that is transmitted by the mosquito Aedes aegypti and causes fever, rashes, joint pains and eye inflammation in humans.

Detailed description

Zika virus infections have been observed in many tropical and subtropical countries. The transmitting Aedes aegypti mosquito is not found in Germany. During a major epidemic in South America in 2015-2017, a link was found between infection in pregnant women and brain malformations in newborns.
