Rolf Müller receives the Inhoffen Medal 2018
Prof Rolf Müller was honoured with the Inhoffen Prize for his outstanding research in the field of microbial natural product discovery, particularly from Myxobacteria. Müller heads the Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS), a Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) site operated in collaboration with the Saarland University. At the DZIF, he coordinates the research field “Novel Antibiotics”.
“Rolf Müller is one of the most renowned natural product researchers in Europe. His basic research work on microbial agents has been groundbreaking. It has additionally made valuable contributions towards developing future applications, particularly for the treatment of infectious diseases,” says Prof Axel Brakhage, from the Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology (HKI) in Jena and the University of Jena, in his laudatory speech in honour of the prize-winner.
Rolf Müller studied pharmacy at the University of Bonn, where he completed his PhD in 1994 and also obtained his pharmacist’s license. Subsequently, he worked as a scientist at the University of Washington in Seattle, USA, the German Research Centre for Biotechnology (GBF) and the Technical University in Braunschweig, amongst others. Since 2003, Rolf Müller has been Professor of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology at the Saarland University. He researches biologically active agents obtained from microorganisms and from Myxobacteria in particular. The obtained natural products constitute an important source of lead substances for developing therapeutics in the pharmaceutical industry.
