Together against infections - Together for fairness and transparency in science

The scientists of the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF) contribute their insights and professional expertise to the debate within society, thus supporting important decision-making processes - and not just in pandemic times. In recent weeks, they have been increasingly exposed to verbal and physical attacks, triggered not least by unobjective and personalised reports in the media.

This must not happen! The German Center for Infection Research rallies behind its researchers and explicitly supports their freedom to contribute their expertise to the debate without being held personally responsible for unpopular actions. In pandemic times, in particular, their knowledge is essential for successfully dealing with frequently unforeseeable consequences. Transparency in science is a precious asset at any time.

The German Center for Infection Research thus supports the “Call for greater objectivity in crisis situations”, recently published by the Alliance of Science Organisations in Germany in reaction to a much discussed article in the “Bild” newspaper. It concludes as follows:

“Decision makers in politics and society are substantially supported by the findings of science, not only in pandemic times. For that reason, scientists must be free to contribute their expertise.”
