In December 2024, Hamburg-based live entertainment company Stage Entertainment launched a fundraising campaign as part of the pop musical “& Julia”. The aim of the campaign was to raise funds for HIV research at the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF) and for support services offered by the “Alliance Queer Emergency Aid”. The campaign raised an impressive total of 16,942 euros for the DZIF.

“We are totally overwhelmed by the success of the campaign,” says Dr Timo Jäger, Managing Director of the German Center for Infection Research. “We would especially like to thank the donors, everyone at Stage Entertainment who made this fantastic initiative possible and all the volunteer fundraisers for their special commitment.” More than 20 DZIF employees from the Leibniz Institute of Virology and the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine volunteered for the DZIF fundraising campaign and collected the donations at the musical performances.

The donations collected for the DZIF will be used to fund HIV research at the DZIF: “The fight against HIV has not yet been won. Despite intensive studies, there is still neither a cure nor a preventive vaccine,” explains Prof. Marcus Altfeld, coordinator of the “HIV” research area at the DZIF and director of the Leibniz Institute of Virology. The donations will be used to support young researchers in the field of HIV research.

Lucas Obermeyer, theater director at Stage Operettenhaus Hamburg, is also delighted with the positive response to the campaign: “For us, it is the greatest reward to inspire and move people with our shows. It is impressive to see how many musical guests have also taken part in the campaign and made donations”.
