Bridging Topic: Diagnostics
Diagnostic methods are designed to quickly and accurately detect and monitor pathogens.
Diagnostics is often the first and critical step in the treatment of virological and bacterial infectious diseases. It allows identification of the pathogen, assessment of the severity of the disease and initiation of targeted therapeutic measures.
The diagnosis of infectious diseases is particularly challenging because of the large number of pathogens that can cause infections. Diagnostic procedures to identify a specific pathogen are often complex and costly. In countries with limited resources, a lack of testing capacity hinders the early detection of disease outbreaks.
In some cases, diagnostic tests for unknown pathogens must be developed, validated and produced rapidly. In addition to the pathogen itself, it is often necessary to identify its resistance pattern in order to successfully treat resistant bacteria, for example.
Mission of the Bridging Topic "Diagnostics
The development and validation of new diagnostic methods is an important translational topic relevant to all research areas and infrastructures of the DZIF.
Many projects at the DZIF aim at the development and evaluation of new (diagnostic) technologies in order to identify and monitor pathogens faster and in a more targeted manner and to improve clinical management. The interdisciplinary Bridging Topic group "Diagnostics" aims to combine diagnostic expertise across research areas. The group discusses existing projects, clinical needs and technical approaches to identify synergies and develop new strategies for project and product development.
Events
So far, two workshops have been held on the Bridging Topic:
- 1st workshop on September 30, 2024 (Frankfurt)
- Information about the 2nd workshop in January 2025 (Frankfurt)
