Short description

A droplet infection is caused by bacteria or viruses that are released into the air when sneezing, coughing or speaking and hit the mucous membranes of the mouth, nose or eyes of a person in the vicinity.

Detailed description

A number of diseases can be transmitted by droplet infection. The currently best known examples include infections with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19, via the respiratory tract. Other viruses that are transmitted by droplet infection include rhinoviruses and influenza viruses as well as the viral pathogens that cause mumps and measles. Bacterial pathogens, such as those for tuberculosis, whooping cough and scarlet fever, can also be transmitted by droplet infection. Hand hygiene, medical face masks and social distancing as well as a virus-specific vaccination (if available) can reduce the risk of infection.
