Short description

A resistance gene is a gene that can confer reduced sensitivity or resistance to an antibiotic on a bacterium.

Detailed description

Resistance genes can mediate various mechanisms. For example, the proteins they encode can break down or alter antibiotics, protect or modify their target, or transport antibiotics out of the bacterial cell. Resistance genes can be located on the bacterial chromosome or on mobile genetic elements such as plasmids. Mobile resistance genes can be transferred between bacteria through horizontal gene transfer, thereby contributing to the spread of antibiotic resistance.
