Detailed description
Vaccines were traditionally produced by isolation of a
pathogen, its inactivation and attenuation followed by confrontation with the human
immune system. This approach proved very successful for pathogens that do not show much variation of their antigens. Nowadays, novel biotechnological and molecular biological methods allow a different and much more directed and rational approach in
vaccine development.
