Epidemiology investigates the occurrence and distribution of diseases within the population. Moreover, molecular biology techniques are used in molecular epidemiology.
Detailed description
Epidemiologists use mainly statistical methods to make statements about the incidence of a disease in a population or to simulate the spread of an epidemic with models. Molecular epidemiology gains insights from the molecular properties of a human or a pathogen.
Helicobacter pylori, a globally distributed gastric bacterium, is genetically highly adaptable. The DZIF team of Professor Sebastian Suerbaum at LMU has now characterized its population structure in

The working group deals with the genetic analysis of tuberculosis pathogens. It uses the latest techniques of DNA sequencing (next generation sequencing) to determine the distribution of individual TB strains based on gene sequences. The molecular epidemiological data are combined with traditional ...
The Clinical Research Unit (CRU) for healthcare-associated infections, headed by Dr. med. Siri Göpel, combines knowledge from clinical practice, microbiology, basic research and epidemiology. Scientists and physicians work closely together, investigate various aspects of hospital-associated ...
This research group, led by Professor Marylyn Addo, initiates and coordinates translational research in the field of emerging infections with a particular focus on Ebola, MERS, Lassa and Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever. Immunology studies, vaccine development, testing of novel anti-infectives and ...

Medical data and biological samples obtained from transplant patients are collected and managed across Germany with the help of the DZIF Transplant Cohort. The data and samples form the basis of scientific studies which investigate the connections between numerous factors influencing an organ’s ...
United against infections The corona pandemic has made it clear how important infection research is. However, the emergence and spread of unknown viruses such as, most recently, SARS-CoV-2 is not new
This year, the Memento Research Award for neglected diseases goes to Professor Jürgen May from the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine (BNITM) in Hamburg. The jury honours his longstanding
