Microbiologist and DZIF infection researcher Prof Andreas Peschel was honoured with the Emil von Behring Award of the University of Marburg on July 7, 2022 for his outstanding research on antibiotic-resistant pathogens.

Prof Peschel received the award "in particular for his scientific achievements and innovative approaches that have led to the discovery of new antibiotics to combat multi-resistant bacteria," said Prof Erhard Bremer during his laudation.

Especially Prof Peschel's work on the role of the microbiome in the evolution and spread of the important bacterial infectious agent Staphylococcus aureus and its "MRSA"-named antibiotic-resistant variants, as well as the development of corresponding prevention strategies, have attracted attention far beyond the scientific community.

"With multidrug-resistant pathogens, we have a silent pandemic that threatens us. We are convinced that collaborative research on antibiotic-resistant pathogens and microbiome interactions can help us fight this threat," Prof Peschel said at the award ceremony.

The Emil von Behring Prize, one of Germany's most prestigious awards for medical microbiology, virology and immunology, is awarded every two years by Philipps University Marburg in memory of Emil von Behring, the discoverer of the diphtheria serum and founder of serum therapy. The prize money of 20,000 euros associated with the award is donated by the companies at the Behringwerke site - BioNTech, CSL Behring, GSK, Nexelis, Pharmaserv and Siemens Healthineers. Due to the Corona pandemic, the award ceremony for 2021 was postponed to this year.
